Training Schedule

We pride ourselves in developing the best officials possible and we would love to help introduce you to calling a great sport. Our training focuses on teaching the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS or “Federation”) rule book and the Collegiate Commissioner Association (CCA) mechanics manual.

Each year, BVUA begins regular training sessions in January, usually meeting on Monday nights to review the rule book. In February we transition to more hands-on clinics teaching umpires the mechanics of working the plate and bases. Then, weather permitting, we call scrimmage games in the first weeks of March before the season begins. Monday meetings continue through the spring season as we review on-field issues umpires have encountered including complex situations and unique plays. To conclude our spring meetings, we hold a 3-man umpiring system clinic to prepare officials for working playoff games.

The early training sessions are focused on helping new members pass the closed-book rules test required by CHSAA in order to call high school baseball. All officials are required to attend at least five meetings or training sessions each year in order to work at the high school level.

Beyond the spring high school season, we send umpires to advanced training sessions and many seek out opportunities to work at higher levels of play.
